FOOTBALL REPORT
Last weekend against Skipton saw the footballers come away with one win and four losses across the day. Our seniors put in one of their better performances in the second half of the year and were in with a winning chance at the final break after a very strong third quarter. With our pressure at the level we know makes it hard for opposition to compete with us, we were able to control field position and generated 11 scoring shots and also kicked a couple out of bounds. Unfortunately our return of 4.7 did not get us in front before the break and Skipton were able to reset and hold on for the win. There’s no doubt the fantastic condition of the Bull Milgate Oval currently helped us to play the style of footy we want and assisted us to a better performance. Our Reserves, U/18 and U/15 teams all met stronger opposition and whilst competing hard were unable to have enough impact on the scoreboard to swing the result our way.
The star performers of the day were the U/12 kids who played a ripping game and kicked a season high of 13.10. Logan Price, playing on permit from Sebastopol, kicked five goals and was named best player while Akir McDougall slotted home three majors. With seven goalkickers the kids were happy to share the spoils around in a great team effort. Duke and Diesel Wallis were both named amongst the best players, along with Tex Twentyman, in a big day for two families well connected to the club across our ranks. The development of the U/12 squad from the start of the season to now has been fantastic to watch and with many of the kids returning to the grade next year we can expect to see further improvement next season.
Off to the Wallace Recreation Reserve to meet Springbank this weekend and the seniors find themselves in a game where victory would put paid to our opposition’s finals chances. The three other games see us encountering a top four team in each grade but it won’t mean there is a lack of effort. Every week our teams take the field and do their absolute best to make the Clunes supporters proud and this week will be no different.
Senior Player I’m looking forward to watching this week: Oli Erickson has played a dozen games in the Seniors across the past two season and shown that he should be a regular in our 1st XVIII lineup for many years. Oli is only 19 years old and plays tougher than his build would suggest. Lightly framed but farm tough, Oli never shirks an issue and is deceptively tall allowing him to take an opponent from the wing into our forward line and force them to defend him in the air. One to watch now and in the future.
Reserves player I’m looking forward to watching this week: Beau Trahar had two front teeth broken a fortnight ago against Rokewood Corindhap but was running around at training on Thursday night, looking as if he had never been hurt. Beau works hard every week and everybody can expect to see him crashing into contests again this week.
Junior players I’m looking forward to watching this week: During the week there has been a couple of great photos posted on our social media of Jesse Sardo with Duke Wallis and Matt Ryan with Percy Clark. Our littlest players look up to our senior players and I’m really keen to see how Duke and Percy play this week. Hopefully they’ve been inspired by Jesse and Matt and rack up the possessions just like them.

NETBALL REPORT
Last weekend our netballers headed to Springbank and came away with a strong day across the grades, with most teams able to get their hands on a win. It was another positive step forward for the group, with improved defensive pressure a real highlight throughout the day. Our defenders worked hard to create turnovers and put pressure on Skipton’s attack, giving our midcourters and goalers more opportunities to control the game.
The closer contests were a good test for our teams, with plenty of pressure applied at both ends of the court and the girls having to work hard to maintain their composure. Across the day there were plenty of positives to take from the performances, particularly the improvement in our defensive efforts and the willingness to keep working when the game was on the line.
As the home and away season winds down, every game provides another opportunity to build on the work put in throughout the year and finish the season strongly, building on skills and knowledge for next season.
