NETBALL REPORT
After a well-earned week off, our netballers are refreshed and ready to return to the court this Saturday as we make the trip to Dunnstown for another important round of CHNL action.
With the season entering the business end, every game becomes increasingly valuable as teams look to cement their ladder positions and build momentum heading towards finals.
The match-up of the day comes in the Under 13B competition, where our young Magpies will put their undefeated season on the line. Sitting proudly on top of the ladder with 44 points, Clunes holds a two-win advantage over second-placed Dunnstown, making this a huge clash between the competition's top two sides. It's a fantastic reward for the hard work the girls have put in all season and should be a great contest.
Our Under 13A side currently sits seventh on 26 points, while the Under 15s also find themselves in seventh position on 28 points. The girls are eager to return from the bye with a strong performances.
The Under 17s head into the round sitting 12th and will be aiming to build on the positives they've shown throughout the season. Our senior grades continue to work hard each week, with D Grade in 11th, B Grade 13th, C Grade 14th and A Grade 14th. The results definitely don't reflect the effort, improvement and drive the girls show week in, week out. There are plenty of positives to take into the final rounds of the season!!
With a top of 11 and showers forecast, be sure to rug up and make the trip to Dunnstown to support our Maggies. Every voice on the sidelines makes a difference, and we'd love to see plenty of black and white cheering on our players across all grades!
FOOTBALL REPORT
Another tough day on the field last time out for our Maggies as Daylesford were able to show their depth and talent in senior grades. The Seniors were able to generate opportunities in our forward line but found the Bulldogs too hard to handle on turnover as they extended the lead each quarter. Our skipper, Josh Thompson, played a different role as he was responsible for nullifying one of Daylesford’s defensive leaders in Alex Boyse. Josh played a great game and we all got to see the unique sight of the twins playing together in the forward line as he joined Ryan inside the forward arc. The Reserves were outclassed across the entire game but we continue to see positive signs from the playing group and take pleasure from little wins like outscoring the opposition in the second quarter. Lachlan Becker continues to improve and has proved a valuable recruit while the milestone man, Ash Anderson, gave his all in his 150th senior game and was named in the best.
Our U/15s competed incredibly hard with an undermanned lineup that had five U/12 kids helping out. The youngsters lost by 18 points but did a great job and were only opened up in one quarter. Despite the loss the team remains in eighth place and is still a good chance to play finals this season. Brock Twentyman kicked three goals and brought his season tally to 25 which is a fantastic effort and has him tied for sixth in the league this season. The highlight of the day was the U/18s big win as they capitalised on a Daylesford team that is competing hard but finding the constant struggle for numbers to be their biggest challenge. Our young blokes capitalised on their opportunity, recording a 152 point victory, in which Nick Baulch kicked six goals, Brett Coon was swung forward and kicked four and Benji Featherston continued his good form to be in the best players again.
On the road to Dunnstown this weekend with the challenge again in front of us to produce good football when injury and unavailability is impacting across the grades. The Seniors and Reserves both play the team positioned fourth on the ladder which presents us simultaneously with the challenge of a good opponent but also the chance to cause an upset that would reshape the ladder. The U/18s play the seventh team in their competition and also have the opportunity to upset a higher ranked opponent, and coming off their performance last week their confidence will be high and they will be competitive. Our U/15s will still be without support from the Wesley College cohort and will need some U/12s to back up again but they are a great chance to get another win on the board and retain their position in the top eight.
During the week the Reclink organisation used the Bull Milgate Oval to play a game between their Ballarat and Maryborough teams. Reclink website states their aim as: We support people with a disability and people with mental health challenges or who are at risk of poor mental health, particularly young people. This takes us into many communities and groups including homelessness, youth cohorts, refugee, elderly and lonely, drug and alcohol addicts and communities that have been impacted by natural disaster. We also focus on low socio economic communities and regional/remote communities where people have limited or no opportunity to participate. Clunes FNC connection to Reclink is through Doug Garth who has had a long involvement with the organisation and Hannah McGuire who was a contributor to Reclink before her untimely passing. News reports in the Courier this week highlighted Hannah’s connection to many of the participants in the football match on Wednesday. Connections like this to the community are why sporting organisations like Clunes FNC exist and this game highlights, once again, that while we are aways striving for an elusive premiership, the benefit of community involvement through sport is the real success story for us all.
Hopefully we have a successful day on the field and the court this weekend and come away with some great wins and some great memories.
